Media and Entertainment
Issue VII: Spring 2023
Dear Reader,
The Media and Entertainment column is excited to be making its debut! We hope to present a fantastic array of topics that reflect on one of the most powerful and important industries in the world. From movies to social media to the news, our individual attention has been
commodified and packaged into ten second reels, four hour feature films, and 24/7 news cycles but what is the socioeconomic impact of it all? Behind the scenes, mass surveillance and bulk data collection have become some of the most valuable resources in history. In this issue of WBR, our brilliant staff writers have put together some thought provoking articles on topics ranging from Taylor Swift’s unseen savvy as a businesswoman, Hollywood’s submissive silence at the hands of China’s lucrative market, and the booming dominance of a once-small production studio called A24.
Enjoy!

All eyes are on A24, the art-house film distribution and production company, for the 95th Oscars.

Or, do you decide to stream a different movie on Netflix from the comfort of your home, with your feet up, and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s Half Baked from your freezer, and wait to watch the new movie until it is out of theaters?
Apple, Amazon, Google, and Facebook have taken full control of the technology market and subsequent consumer brainpower through their lucrative data-driven engagement strategies, leading to unprecedented profits, political censorship, and psychological dependence.
